The Wildlife Trusts’: Renters’ Retreat - a ‘Get Started’ Show Garden for RHS Hampton Court 2023

Delighted to announce that The Wildlife Trusts and I will be bringing a ‘Get Started’ show garden to Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival 2023. This garden is all about inspiring and empowering the 7+ million rented households across the country to “get started” and/or grow their gardening ambitions, empowering them to realise what is possible without ‘owning’ their patch.

The garden itself takes the common paved and walled courtyard and explores how this space can be made into a beautiful and relaxing haven for both wildlife and humans - without attaching things to walls or digging into the ground. Key features in the garden include:

  • a hügelkultur mound (permaculture method which encourages a water retentive growing medium)

  • log planters

  • a seating area for reading, relaxing or having a coffee.

  • modular raised beds, that can be dismantled and moved

  • a raised pond

  • a containerised tree

  • methods for small size home composting and rainwater capture

My aim that the garden helps debunk some ideas about what is possible to do when you rent; to empower and inspire people to feel more confident to go out and make positive change for themselves and for our planet. The garden is showing we all have a role to play in reversing nature’s decline.

Come along to the show and see if for yourself or follow along on Instagram for regular updates.
